For her outstanding contributions as a first through third grade teacher, Gloria Shirley is recognized on the Wall of Fame by the Walnut Faculty Social Fund of Emporia, Kansas.
According to the Walnut faculty:
Gloria Shirley taught at Walnut Elementary School for 20 of her 31 years of teaching. She also taught in Iowa, Nebraska, Texas and Fort Riley, Kansas. Gloria was a very creative teacher. She used many hands-on activities, guest speakers and numerous field trips so learning experiences were more meaningful for the children. She had many resources or knew where to get them, and was always very willing to share with her colleagues. Gloria wanted everyone to learn and was very dedicated. She gave many extra hours before and after school, and even during lunchtime, so she could help her students learn. She was very active in professional activities and committees, where she was willing to assume a leadership role.
Gloria Shirley was a teacher for 31 years. From 1977-1998, she taught Walnut Elementary School/USD 253 in Emporia, Kansas.
