E. May (Pat) LindquistRetired Elementary Teacher
Brookville, Kansas
Total years as a classroom teacher: 31 (an additional 23 years substitute teaching, homebound teaching, tutoring and mentoring)
"A teacher is someone who sees each child as a unique person, and encourages individual talents and strength by building up confidence and raising self-esteem in each one of them." - E. May (Pat) Lindquist
E. May (Pat) Lindquists' first teaching experience was at a one-room country schoolhouse, Yankee Run, in Ellsworth, Kansas in 1931.
Pat describes herself not as retired, but as "retreaded". After thirty-one years of classroom teaching she has given twenty-three years to substituting, homebound teaching, tutoring, and mentoring.
She believes the two biggest educational issues facing American education today are respect and apathy. If respect would be taught beginning in the home, it would carry to the schools, spill into the community, and the nation. The community as a whole, not just schools, must accept responsibility for the preparations of all students to succeed in life.
Pat is particularly known for keeping various 'road kill' in her freezer that she takes out and uses during lessons.
"Pat is one of the most looked up to and well-respected educational resources I know. Her 90+ years of life and educational experience make Pat an indispensable member of our community. Pat's most important characteristic is the phenomenal insight she has when working with youth."--Gregory W. Brockway, USD 307 Ell-Saline School Board President and friend
"Pat put up with my boundless energy and mischievous ways and I was successful, because she was patient, caring, enthusiastic and a problem solver that saw me, the problem, as an opportunity." --Brenda Wikoff, Supervisor and former student
"With respect, grace, and accemptance she gently gains an unspoken authority. Her inherent ability makes learning an adventurous springboard into life itself." --Fay Clements, former student and parent of students
