Corona, California
Years in present position: 14
Total years as a classroom teacher: 25

Career Highlights

  •  Susan Moore Haas has written a variety of documents and books
that support kindergarten students, their parents, and their teachers.
She has been praised by colleagues throughout the United States for her
expertise in literacy instruction and presents seminars across the
    nation.
  • Haas says her “philosophical beliefs concerning how children make
sense of the world around them are the foundation of the instructional
program I have created for my students. I believe all children deserve
to be taught in an environment that will promote, value, and nurture
    their natural desire to learn.”
  • Her home reading program, called Lap-Reading, educates parents in
early literacy strategies by offering monthly ideas that increase
reading at home. The Lap-Reading program is used by hundreds of other
educators and parents across the nation.
  • Haas incorporates a stuffed animal mascot named Spot in her class.
Spot travels home with each child sometime during the school year and
sleeps over two nights at the child’s home. Spot has his own personal
journal where the child writes and draws about his adventures. He has
been around for so many years that he has become a member of the
community. Spot has been featured in the local newspaper, attended
Brownie meetings and football games, co-piloted a news-radio airplane,
visited the dentist for a check-up, and loves to be goofy at Disneyland.
