For her outstanding contributions as a school teacher, Alice is recognized on the Donors’ Wall of Fame by Dorothy Radke, Glenn Groom, Lois Hylton, and Kenneth Groom of Wichita, Kansas.
This is in remembrance of our mother, Alice Groom, who taught for twenty-five years.  She came from a large family of whom quite a few were teachers.
Alice attended Kansas Wesleyan University at Salina for two years.  She taught near Plainville one year and at another rural school near Stockton, Kansas for one year.  After she married Roe Groom, she became a full-time housewife until her children were grown, and two of them had become teachers.  Alice worked on her degree at Emporia State Teachers College.  She took summer classes, Saturday classes, and correspondence courses.  In 1955, she received her degree.
Garfield School in Council Grove burned down and teachers held classes at several locations until the new building was built.  Alice taught first and second grades.  She kept good discipline, but she was a kind and understanding friend to the children.  Her son-in-law was principal at her school at one time, and she even had a grandson in her room one year.  Alice retired in 1968, so that she and her husband could travel together.
Alice Groom, whose career spanned twenty five years, taught two years in rural schools from 1921-1923.  She then taught first or second grade in Council Grove, Kansas until her retirement in 1968.
